Karen Gayle Harvell Smith, age 52, of Alvin, Texas passed away Monday, May 24, 2010 in Rosharon, Texas. Karen was born on July 6, 1957 in San Benito, Texas and was a lifetime resident of Alvin. She was employed by G.T.E. and was a member of the Baptist faith. Karen was preceded in death by her father, James “Bud” Harvell.

Karen is survived by her mother, Anna Harvell of Alvin, Texas; daughter, Rachel Smith of Alvin, Texas; son, Nicholas Tyler Smith of Alvin, Texas; brother, Greg Harvell and wife Shirley of Sweeny, Texas; niece, Tracey O’Neal of The Woodlands, Texas; nephews, Brent Harvell of Sweeny, Texas, Brandon Harvell of Houston, Texas, and Bryan Lacina of Arkansas; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 31, 2010 at Scott Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Randy Jones officiating.

Woman killed, son injured in accident

On Monday afternoon, FM 1462 took another life. Killed in the crash was 52 year-old Alvin resident Karen Gayle Harvell Smith.

Her son, Nicholas Tyler Smith (also of Alvin), was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center via Life Flight. As of press time, Nicholas was listed in good condition.

The accident occurred near the CR 511/FM 1462 intersection. The incident began when a Lincoln Navigator was traveling southbound on County Road 511.

The driver then attempted to cross FM 1462. As he attempted to cross the roadway, the Navigator was hit by an 18-wheel truck.

The impact caused the Navigator to spin into a Camry, which was traveling westbound on FM 1462.

The Navigator then flipped on its side and landed atop the Camry carrying Smith.

The 18 wheel truck continued traveling eastbound and hit a pick-up traveling on FM 1462. The 18 wheel tuck then landed upside down in a ditch.

The driver of the truck was transported to a local hospital, as was the female driver of the pick-up. The driver of the Navigator was not injured. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Department of Public Safety Deputies are continuing to handle the investigation of the crash.

“The Lincoln Navigator failed to yield the right-of-way. I believe that the driver’s view was obstructed. FM 1462 is not a dangerous roadway, yet, drivers just make dangerous decisions while driving on that stretch of highway,” said Department of Public Safety Sergeant Richards.
