Leta

Leta Marie Foster Griffin of Fredericksburg, Texas, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on February 13, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was a religious woman known for her compassion, fierce love of family and unwavering faith.

Of all the roles she held in her life, the one she cherished most was being “Yaya” to her grandchildren. Nothing brought her greater joy than time spent with them. Being Yaya was not just a title she carried proudly – it was the role that filled her heart completely.

Leta was born on June 9, 1957 in Texas City, Texas to William David and Mildred Marie Foster. The youngest of four siblings, she grew up in Alvin, Texas and graduated from Alvin High School in 1975. After high school, Leta worked in roles as City Secretary and Police Officer for League City, Texas.

After moving to Austin in 1987, Leta spent over a decade with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality – formerly known as the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. When her children were young, she was an active member of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church and a beloved parent volunteer for the youth group. She was affectionately known by many as “Mama Leta,” “Mamacita,” or “Chiquita Leta.” She opened both her heart and her home to her children’s friends as if they were her own, always listening without judgment and loving them unconditionally.

In 2002 she moved to Jackson, Michigan with her husband and youngest daughter. While in Jackson, she enjoyed being part of her church and square dancing communities and valued the friendships she built during this season of her life.

Leta was rarely without a book in hand. She found comfort in reading and could often be found lost in a story late into the evening. She also loved to play games with friends and family. Birding was a passion she and Tom shared. They always kept a birding book close by, eager to mark off each new species they spotted while celebrating even the smallest addition to their growing list.

Leta was an animal lover of all kinds but had a special fondness for cats. If there was a cat in need, Leta would find a way to help. So many animals were lucky to call her their person over the years.

Leta was preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother, Ronald Joe Foster.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 19 years, Thomas Griffin of Fredericksburg, Texas; daughters Stefanie Boyle (Mark) of Cedar Park, Texas & Lindsay Williams (Matthew) of Austin, Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Abigail Boyle, Luke Boyle, Wylie Williams and Sadie Williams. She is also survived by her stepson, Matthew Griffin (Heather) of Boston, Massachusetts and stepgranddaughter Eleanor; her stepdaughter Erica Kwiatowski (Tom) of Lisbon, Portugal; her sister, Sue Moore of Texas City, Texas; her brother, Wayne Foster of Bay City, Texas; and best friends Woody and Belinda Wood of Leslie, Michigan.
